There is a sharpening nip in the air as the days grow shorter and the evenings crisper. Soon there will be wishes of good will toward all on everyone’s lips, silver bells will begin ringing, the world will move to the rhythm of a choir singing Silent Night, and the guy with the sleigh will prepare for his busy night. And you know what that means – the newest crop of hot video games will be coming out soon. The new games will take us away from mundane distractions like the auto loan calculator and the weather bug, and back to the important things in life, like how many bad guys can you grease in one session.
“Battle Field 3″ from Electronic Arts and “Call of Duty 3: Modern Warfare” are early releases that feature modern and up-to-date weaponry on modern urban battlefields. The Call of Duty franchise has continued with its tradition of great play that began in its WWII installments, and Battle Field promises to be just as intense.
“Rage” from Bethesda Softworks is set in the near future, after the earth has been impacted by a asteroid. The action promises to be filled with gore and violence as humanity tries to rebuild civilization while opposing forces of raider gangs, mutants, and “The Authority”.
Rock Steady Studios has a sequel to 2009′s “Batman: Arkham Asylum”. In the new “Batman: Arkham City” the player will guide the Caped Crusader through a sprawling super-prison that is five times larger than the original asylum. The game is awash in predator and stealth tactics, along with plenty of the usual Batman gadgets.
“Resistance 3″ is exclusive to the PlayStation 3, coming from Sony Computer Entertainment. This will be a continuation of the the fight against the Chimera alien colony, which has attempted to take over Europe in “Resistance: The Fall of Man” and crossed to North America in “Resistance 2″. In this game the action will follow Joseph Capelli and take place in major cities like New York and St Louis.
Many analysts have noted that this has been a very busy release schedule for the gaming industry, especially with rumors of upgraded motion sensing capabilities for Xbox and PlayStation 3 consoles.
Of course this is the money-making season for the industry, but there is a danger in the crowded market. At $40- $60 dollars a pop, gamers may find their wallets empty from the early releases by the time some of the later games come out.
